Exploring the Yellowstone Backcountry: A Guide to the Hiking Trails of Yellowstone With Additional Sections on Canoeing, Bicycling, and Cross-Countr
Published in Paperback by Sierra Club Books (June, 1992)
Author: Orville E. Bach
Average review score:

Yellowstone Yes
This is the best trails book for any of the mountain states national parks. I have not found a book for Glacier or Rocky Mountain National parks as good as this book. The Kent and Donna Dannen guide to RMNP comes close. This book may look as if it is for backpackers, but it has lots of info for day hikes, too.

Finn Burnett, Frontiersman (Frontier Classics)
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (01 March, 2003)
Authors: Robert Beebe David and Robert Clark
Average review score:

Recommended for students of American frontier history
Biographer Robert Beebe David provides the reader with a straightforwardly narrated account in Finn Burnett, Frontiersman, the biography of an extraordinary pioneer of the American frontier. In the upper Plains and northern Rockies, Finn Burnett was at first a staunch battler against Indians, but later befriended them, including famous individuals such as Washakie, the Shoshone chief, and Sacajawea, known for her role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. Part of the Stackpole Books "Frontier Classics Series", Finn Burnett, Frontiersman is very highly recommended reading for students of American frontier history.

Fly Fishing the Madison
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine
Average review score:

A distillation of decades of experience
Volume three in the oustanding Greycliff "River Books" series, Fly Fishing The Madison offers the aspiring angler a distillation of decades of experience, knowledge, and insight in this "user friendly" guide to fishing Montana's Madison river. Here is a wealth of information on the hatches, seasons, and reaches of the river, along with "tips, tricks & techniques" for unlocking the secrets of an surprisingly diverse river. The authors show how to fish the Madison with dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, as well as pointing out the right moments for each type of fly. Of special interest is Craig Mathews' contributions about fishing the Madison's two "stillwater" areas -- Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. If you are planning an excursion to the Madison, begin by a thorough reading of Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine's Fly Fishing The Madison! Also very highly recommended for the angler's reference shelf are the other volumes in this outstanding series: Fly Fishing The Beaverkill; Fly Fishing The Henry's Fork; and Fly Fishing The Yellowstone In The Park.

Frontier Spirit: The Story of Wyoming
Published in Paperback by Johnson Books (November, 1986)
Authors: Craig Sodaro and Randy Adams
Average review score:

Outstanding survey of an exciting place
This book is the best overall history of the state that I have ever read. It is written for the casual reader and colors the many exciting events with vivid descriptors that leave the reader enchanted. Rarely is so much captured in so few pages. This was truely an entertaining read.

Gerry Spence's Wyoming: The Landscape: Photographs and Poetry
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 1900)
Author: Gerry L. Spence
Average review score:

You just can't loose with Gerry Spence
This is a "coffeetable" book of photos and poems. They are excellent renderings of Wyoming. The book comes with a CD of Mr. Spence reading the poems. Sit back, turn on the CD and go on a journey of the past, the future and the everchanging beauty of Wyoming. There is food for thought in the poems, also. It is very interesting to note the difference between the way one reads the poems and the way Mr. Spence, as their author, reads them.

Great Trails for Family Hiking: The Tetons
Published in Paperback by Pruett Publishing Co. (June, 1995)
Author: Jerry Painter
Average review score:

An on the money, great family planner
This book was the most well used and helpful of the several that we took along on our Teton vacation. It was absolutely exact in everything from its trail descriptions, to which forks to take for what results, to whether or not insects would bother us on a particular hike. We used it daily to plan our upcoming adventures. I appreciate having a hiking book geared toward young families, and this one surely enabled us to enjoy many great and unforgetable hiking experiences with our 3 children. I love the off the beaten path and hidden places that the author so expertly describes. Many times we felt that we were the only people in the park.

Green Grass of Wyoming
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (June, 1988)
Average review score:

This is a wonderful book!
This book, the third in the series that includes "My Friend Flicka," and "Thunderhead," is just as delightful as the first two books. In this book the characters are lavishly developed and the fascinating story line is continued. This is a must read for anyone who loves horse stories.

Heaven May Have Quills
Published in Hardcover by Ivy House Publishing Group (January, 1999)
Author: Jack D. Osenbaugh
Average review score:

Heavn May Have Quills
This is a wonderfully-written love story. But instead of detailed love scenes in typical romance novels, it is written respectfully about the relationship between the characters. The "love story" is also about the characters' love of Wyoming. The descriptions of the landscape are so vivid it is not hard to see it in your mind even if you've never been to Wyoming. It was hard to put this one down and well worth reading, especially for those that love wide open spaces.
